Lubavitch Chabad defers its dream

For months, people living near the southwest corner of Clark and Chestnut wondered about the hole in the ground. The owner, Lubavitch Chabad, planned a Center for Jewish Life on the site, but couldn't raise the money.

Apparently deferring its dream of a new building, the organization has a tentative agreement to sell the property to Chicago-based LG Development Group. Ariel Weissberg, attorney for Lubavitch Chabad, said LG wants to build a 15- to 20-story condo building with just two high-end units per floor. The Chabad, he said, may look at other sites to build a spiritual sanctuary.

The property is part of a planned development that requires any developer to obtain the consent of neighbors before building. Talks are under way, Weissberg said, noting that downtown Ald.

More caution, less ego can be difference between life, death

Personally, I believe we could use a little more of it.

The second avalanche death in eight days occurred over the weekend in the backcountry adjacent to Vail Mountain known as the East Vail Chutes, a place I've skied on and off with friends for the better part of a decade. The Jan. 4 death of 27-year-old Jesse Brigham came as a surprise to none of them. For different reasons, the death Friday of 33-year-old Matthew Gustafson did.

While my condolences go out to family and friends of both, we shouldn't let the lessons from these tragedies die with them.

In terms of protocol, both these guys and the parties they skied with appeared to do many things right. They had all the gear. They did some basic stability tests. They skied with partners and dropped in one at a time.

But the question I hear — and find myself asking — time and again is, "What the heck were they doing there in the first place?"

I understand the allure of the backcountry, or, in the case of East Vail, what I'd consider sidecountry.

Tippett hopes election is omen for Pats

Former New England linebacker Andre Tippett hopes his election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame will be a good omen for the Patriots on Sunday.

As New England's executive director of community affairs, Tippett had plenty of support from the Patriots' Super Bowl traveling party as he waited to learn whether he was headed to Canton.

''Everybody, from Day 1 when we got here, they were like, 'Hey, we're looking to do something special -- you on Saturday and us on Sunday,''' Tippett said on Saturday. ''It couldn't have happened at a greater time.''

High Fuel Prices Bringing More People to Food Pantry

Higher fuel costs have affected some Ashley County residents in ways other than requiring them to pay more at the pump and to pay higher utility bills. Hamburg Helping Hands Food Pantry Director Mary Williams explained recently that while fuel costs have increased, working extra hours to make ends meet is not an option for a percentage of elderly residents collecting social security. During January, according to Williams, the pantry aided 114 families.

"The biggest group served are senior citizens, 70 to 80-years-old. They're the ones struggling most," Williams said, adding that 70 percent of those assisted through the pantry are senior citizens.

"Try living on $600 a month to pay utilities and see how far that takes you," she said. Seniors also face medical issues combined with the increased living expenses.
