Details of 25 million lost in revenue office ‘catastrophe’

A BBC News24 commentator said a darling is not going to like reading the front pages or a considerable amount of the content of todays newspapers. I suspect neither will the over whelming majority of the other readership. ...are you and I deeply concerned by this erm problem? Well ah'm not just concerned , ah'm just bluidy angry. I suspect a massive damage limitation exercise is now in full swing. By the banks , by other concerned, upset and vulnerable people affected by this disclosure of whatever. Quite frankly, a motion of no confidence in this Labour governments ability to be fit for government should be tabled in the appropriate place...and the sooner the better before more staggering examples of incompetence are revealed and the culprits remain in office to continue their incompetence or sham of being competent.

City officials: NBA All-Star weekend helped prove N.O. is back

Basking in the glory of a successful NBA All-Star weekend, New Orleans officials said the event highlighted an unprecedented run in which the rebuilding city firmly re-established itself as a mecca for special events and conventions.

The performance of the city's civil services and hospitality community during a six-week window -- in which New Orleans hosted two major football bowl games, Mardi Gras and the NBA All-Star Game -- should emphatically answer any questions about its post-Katrina viability as a premier destination for special events and conventions, officials said during a news conference Monday at City Hall.

"We have reaffirmed our position as a special-event city," said Doug Thornton, regional vice president of SMG, the company that manages the New Orleans Arena and the Superdome for the state.

Cubs' DeRosa to Have Heart Procedure

MESA, Ariz. - Cubs second baseman Mark DeRosa will undergo a heart procedure in Chicago on Thursday to correct an irregular heartbeat.

Team doctor Stephen Adams said DeRosa is expected to return to Arizona on Sunday, be back on the field as early as Monday and ready to play in spring training games by March 8.

"Theoretically, this should take care of the problem," Adams said Wednesday.

Dominican presidential candidates react to poll as expected

Hillary Clinton was suppose to walk away with the Democratic nomination. Now she is barely hanging in. John McCain was almost a goner in the summer, out of money and had to reshuffle his campaign staff. Now he is about to clinch the Republican nomination.

Appalachian policy prohibits student-teaching for resident assistants

Due to a new policy approved in December 2007, student teachers are no longer eligible for a resident assistant position. “The students that have done [student teaching] in the past have barely survived as an RA," Director of Residence Life Jeff Doyle said. “This was in the best interest of the residents and student teachers."Doyle said student teachers wake as early as 6 a.m. and are at school until 3 or 4 p.m., giving them only around 7 hours before they go to bed to eat, socialize, plan for the next day and fulfill RA requirements. The department feared the student teachers would be making sacrifices either in their student teaching jobs, or in the RA position. “We estimate the RA job takes 17 hours a week, student teaching is 40 hours and that's already 57 hours of weekly requirements," Doyle said.

February 2008

Eliot Spitzer was one of six governors interviewed about the presidential contest by The Washington Post at the National Governor's Association in D.C.

Asked what advice he would give to Hillary Clinton, whom he has endorsed and pledged to cast a superdelegate ballot for, Spitzer said: "I'd tell her keep doing what she's been doing," adding: "She's making a powerful case."

But the governor also made no secret of his admiration for Barack Obama, saying: "Let's face it, Barack emotes in a way that is remarkable."

Asked later whether he believes experience is necessary to bring about real change in government, Spitzer answered, rather diplomatically and in his typical wonky way (he also employed the Spitzeresque buzzword "pivotal" during the interview): "It's not a binary choice."

On his own record, Spitzer listed Medicaid reform and increased education spending (which he has proposed curtailing to some degree this year) as his most significant accomplishments.

He took care of her as best he could," recalls Phil Cisneros Jr. "It took a toll on him and the entire family." When Phil Sr. was finally forced to place Lucy in a nursing home, he took a handyman job at the home to be close to her — she would eat only if he was feeding her.

It was a difficult time, a time that would drive many men to drink. Cisneros was one of them. He'd never been a teetotaler; prosecutors say he'd been busted for DUI in 1980. But with his wife's health declining, a one-time problem became a frightening pattern. Cisneros got popped for no fewer than four DUIs from 1989 to 1992, barely getting out of jail for one before he was charged with the next.

Lucy died in 1993. Five years later, Cisneros was arrested for drunken driving one more time. He was 75.

It is, indeed, a terrible track record.
